Yesterday I recalled The Temple Cleansing that occurred on the Monday of Holy Week. It was a good day to “come clean” before God. I found I was experiencing this even around 2 am this morning! I imagine it will be ongoing as Christ seeks to consume all of me (and as I am asking Him to!).
Today would be the day Jesus once again returns to Jerusalem and finds himself in some final public teaching positions.* He begins with His disciples as they are traveling toward the city and observe the fig tree that Jesus cursed. Within 24 hours or less it has withered and died. Jesus encourages them to stretch and grow their faith, as such belief in Him would accomplish greater things!
Entering the city, Jesus’ authority is quickly challenged by the Pharisees and teachers of the Law. He answers using the very scriptures they teach and by giving them parables that reflect their shady images.
His disciples wonder when all will come to pass, and Jesus gives them a loaded answer.
Jesus gives them a glimpse into the final Judgement to come. There will be a separation of goats and sheep, and then He clarifies who they are. Surprised and offended the Pharisees and Sadducees go away to plan Jesus’ death.
Jesus concludes this time by refocusing the Disciples’ vision. As they stand in awe of the stone-built temple, Jesus draws their attention to what will be required of them – nothing quite so luxurious as what they see presently. The Church of Christ will find it’s foundation built not upon nicely carved stones and bricks, but upon the crucifixion of Christ and the later persecutions and deaths of His followers. The future seems grim, but therein lies the mystery that the world cannot comprehend. For the servant of Christ sees not as a servant of the world sees. The world’s future ends in dust and eternal fire, but the Christian’s future is only beginning as the body dies. That is the hope we live for – our Real World! No pain, no tears, no worries, no distractions, complete communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! So, though a body may be tortured and burned and pierced until death consumes it, a Christ follower’s soul will now truly know LIFE!
On this Tuesday, I will seek to…
Live a faith that mirrors the God-fidence that Christ displayed. When mountains arise before me, I will seek the faith of a mustard seed and watch the giants fall!
Yield to Christ instead of fighting against Him and His will and His Way.
To watch myself and stay ever ready for His return!
34-36“But be on your guard. Don’t let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, for it’s going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. So, whatever you do, don’t go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that’s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man.”
