On temptation…

My Father sat with me this morning as I was reading and gave me a refresher course.

Although self-control comes from the Spirit of God, we actively carry it out.  Both the Holy Spirit and we are active!…If you try to passively deal with temptation, it will conquer you every day of your life…”Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’, for God cannot be tempted with evil and He Himself tempts no one.  But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.  Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin and sin when it is fully grown, brings forth death.” (James 1:13-15, ESV)…Sin takes place when we agree to the temptation and follow it.  It takes an agreement on our part…As long as we remain obedient to the Lord, drawing our strength and our delight from Him, the evil system around us can drop all sorts of bait and it won’t seriously interest us.  Oh, it’s there.  But our Lord’s Word and power are stronger and more important to us than anything out there…there’s a name for folks who linger and try to reason with lust: victim…Saying no is something all of us who belong to Christ can do.  There’s nothing magical about it.  You simply put Jesus Christ at the helm of you life and say NO!…Counteract temptation.  Do not tolerate it…do not try to peacefully coexist with temptation.  Come out against it…Quit clucking your tongue and shaking your head as you linger over the pages…Run!…Use the right resistance…A bridle isn’t an answer for gossip – you need a muzzle…Remind yourself that the final plan will soon erase the temporary pleasure…(when we give in to temptation) “Joy in God is…extinguished in us and we seek all our joy in the creature.  At this moment God is quite unreal to us, he loses all reality, and only desire for the creature is real; the only reality is the devil.”(Bonhoeffer)…We must tell ourselves over and over, ‘It will not satisfy!’…Control your thought life through the memorized Word…When the Word of God is stored up in our minds, it stands ready to strike…The moral of this isn’t difficult to grasp. If you piddle around with temptation long enough, playing with it, lingering near its bait over and over and over again, then down in the heart and life of your character there will be permanent damage.  That vulnerable flaw or weakness will lead to serious moral damage that you cannot imagine.

Then He solidified His Word to me as I opened this up to pray…

Lord God, according to Your Word, everyone born of You overcomes the world.  This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world?  I do, when I truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God (I John 5:4-5) Christ Jesus, You Yourself are my peace…(Eph. 2:14-15)…Continue to teach me with regard to my former way of life, to put off my old self…and to put on the new self, created to be like You, God, in true righteousness and holiness (Eph4:22-24)

And lest I think He was speaking harshly, He shed light on His love as I looked up…and this…
